Copayments
The US Department of Veterans Affairs has established guidelines for veterans and their copayments. These guidelines allows the VA to bill third parties health insurance carriers for treatment provided to you for non-service connected conditions. This means that the VA will be able to bill your insurance company for episodes of care that meet with appropriate compliance standards. This includes policies held by you, your spouse, your guardian, etc. The hospital is able to keep the funds collected from the insurance companies to better serve your needs as a patient is. The VA will accept all payments from the insurance carrier as payment in full. You will not be responsible for portions of the reimbursable bill that your insurance does not pay. You will not be responsible for any deductible not paid by the third party insurance carrier. However, you might be responsible for a co-payment in the following services —
Any copayments due should be paid upon checking out of the medical center. Copayments may be made at the Agent Cashier window, San Juan VA Medical Center first floor.
Veterans who do not make their copayments upon checking out will receive a bill at their address of record within 30 days after their stay or appointment.
If you have any questions about your copay balance, please contact our VA Caribben Healthcare System MCCF Customer Section at (787) 641-7582 ext 11392 or 11393.
Other Health Insurance
The Department of Veterans Affairs now bills private health insurance companies for care received by their enrollees. You should bring your insurance card with you for your appointment and present it during the check-in process. What's in it for me?
Medicare/Medicaid
The Department of Veterans Affairs does not bill Medicare or Medicaid at this time. You may, however, wish to review information for veterans about the new Medicare prescription drug benefits.
When you come to the VA, please bring your insurance card with you.
