Partners and Education
As a teaching hospital, VA Caribbean Healthcare System provides a full range of services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research.
Academic Partners
The VA Caribbean Healthcare System has the following active academic affiliations with the three LCME (Liaison Committee for Medical Education) accredited medical schools in Puerto Rico:
- University of Puerto Rico (UPR)
- Ponce School of Medicine (PSM)
- Universidad Central del Caribe (UCC)
The San Juan VA Medical Center is affiliated with the UPR Dental, Pharmacy, Nursing, Allied Health Profession Schools and is also physically and functionally near the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus.
Over 1,700 students, residents, fellows and interns, are trained at this facility each year. There are 138 VA-paid medical residents in 23 different specialties’ residency-training programs, 8 of which are sponsored by the VA Caribbean Healthcare System.
The VA Caribbean Healthcare System has institutional and programmatic accreditation from the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) plus accreditation of VA training program by the American Dental, American Psychology, American Pharmacology, American Dietetics Associations and the Accreditation Council of Optometry Education.
The institution has 143 academic affiliation programs with 51 different academic health institutions including 11 nursing training programs with 8 different Nursing Schools plus Dental, Pharmacy, Dietetics, Social Work, Occupational and Physical Therapy, Optometry, Psychology, Laboratory Technology, Radiology Technology, Surgical, Cardiovascular Technology and Respiratory Therapy academic affiliations.
Veterans Service Organizations
VA Caribbean Healthcare System maintains an excellent partnership with all of our veteran service organizations (VSO). We regularly brief our VSO representatives on changes impacting Veterans' health care.
A Veterans Advisory Council (VAC) has been established. This includes stakeholders from a number of veterans groups.
US Department of Defense
As a participant in the US Department of Defense TRICARE Program*, VA Caribbean Healthcare System serves as the main referral source for The women's health and orthopedic specialty appointments.
