Situation Update

Practicing Social Distancing is of Utmost Importance to limit the spread of COVID-19, therefore, most of the primary care and mental health appointments are being done by phone or video conference using “VA Video Connect”.

Veterans who are concerned they may have symptoms of COVID-19 flu or cold should contact the VISN 8 Clinical Contact Center at 1-877-741-3400 prior to visiting the San Juan VA Medical Center (Hospital de Veteranos) and Clinics.  

Veterans needing emergency care should immediately visit the Emergency Department of the San Juan VAMC (Hospital de Veteranos), should call 911; or visit the nearest open emergency room.

All VACHS facilitates are conducting comprehensive screening to all Veterans and staff who present with symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath who meet the CDC criteria for evaluation of COVID-19 infection. Per CDC guidance and VA protocols, individuals known to be at risk for a COVID-19 infection are immediately isolated to prevent potential spread to others. The use of hand sanitizer is a mandated requirement to enter facilities.

There are sufficient supplies on hand including personal protective equipment (PPE) for all Veterans & employees to ensure safe delivery of care. Issue and use of PPE is in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.

There has been no COVID-19 Outbreaks of Veterans or employees at VACHS.

Hospital Operations:

-Emergency Department: Open, regular hours
-Hospital Visiting Hours: Visitation Hours are suspended until further notice (exceptions may be made for end-of-life situations)

Outpatient Clinics Operations:

-Outpatient clinics are open.  Most of the appointments are being done by phone or video conference using “VA Video Connect”. Help us transition your care by visiting the Video on Demand webpage for usage guidelines:  You will be contacted a few days before your scheduled appointment by your care team to discuss your options. When clinically indicated your appointment will be done face-to-face. Veterans are exhorted to request medication refills by using one of the following options:

-By Phone:  Call 1-877-737-8820 and follow instructions.
-Online/Internet: Visit My HealtheVet at  
-By Mail: Send mail refill form to:  VA Caribbean Healthcare System (119), Casia 10, San Juan PR 00921.
-IMPORTANT:  Veterans without refills or have questions about a prescription should call the VISN 8 Clinical Contact Center at 1-877-741-3400 immediately.

Transportation Services:

-Veterans Transportation Service from the Outpatient Clinics to the San Juan VAMC (Hospital de Veteranos) is being coordinated on case by case basis, emphasizing continued access to care to those Veterans with urgent needs.
